Stella McCartney Created The First Sustainable Sequins Jumpsuit

Have you been avoiding sequins? As we know they are not a desirable material for a plastic-free planet. Great news for all of us who love some sparkle in our lives and more importantly in our clothes! Now we get to look forward to a sustainable way of creating clothes with sequins thanks to Stella McCartney.

What better way to be sustainable than learning from nature? Most sustainability-oriented companies and researchers have adopted that approach. Today we see the rewards of it through the creation of the BioSequin.

Stella McCartney collaborated with Radiant Matter in creating the first BioSequin jumpsuit

Radiant Matter is the company behind this invention and they are in the business of developing textile solutions safe for the environment and for human health.

‘Conventional sequins are made of polyester film (Mylar) or vinyl (PVC) which causes particularly significant environmental and health risks, producing toxic, bioaccumulative chemicals, including carcinogens, such as phthalates and hormone disruptors.’1

BioSequins

‘BioSequins are plastic-free, biodegradable and non-toxic, innovated from plant-derived cellulose – using no metals, minerals or synthetic pigments or colorants.’2 Even though, this jumpsuit is not commercially available yet, it is definitely a step in the right direction for the fashion industry.

Last, but not least, as we love to look behind the scenes, we have to take a moment to appreciate the brilliant approach to introducing this sustainable innovation in the most fashionable way.

The collaboration on the project between Stella McCartney and Radiant Matter aligns perfectly. As Stella has been a sustainability leader in the luxury fashion sector, there is nothing better than Cara Delevigne wearing the BioSequin jumpsuit in the April 2023 American Vogue issue.

Selecting Cara Delevigne specifically in this period of her life seems very fitting. Allowing us to reset on multiple levels in our lives. This is the perfect time to look within and embrace it- personally or in our buying habits. And who better to capture this moment of development than Annie Leibovitz? It seems like a beautiful statement of hope and innovation is coming with spring this year!

Don’t forget that you can replicate this branding experience on a smaller scale for your sustainable brand.

Wishing you a mindful Spring!
